Thank you for your interest in participating in the Malta International Music Competition!

We welcome your entry.

The competition is open for piano solo, violin solo, piano ensemble-four hands, any chamber music ensembles (strings and winds) with or without piano from 2 to 5 musicians, of all nationalities.


Enrollment Categories:

Young Category I    (age 7-12 years old) on the day of the competition.

Young Category II   (age 13-17 years old) on the day of the competition.

Competitors may enroll in a higher age category than they belong.

Adult Category         (age 18-33 years old) on the day of the competition.

The age limit for piano solo and violin solo is 33 years.

The total age for a duo may not exceed 62 years (individually maximum 33 years), for a trio may not exceed 93 years (individually maximum 33 years), for a quartet it may not exceed 124 years (individually 33 years) and for a quintet it may not exceed 155 years(individually 33 years), on the day of the competition.

The competition will consist of one session in the Young Category and three sessions in the Adult Category. All sessions are open to the public.

All pianists, violinists and ensembles in Adult Categories will complete a first round, after which maximum of 12  will qualify for the second round. Only 5 soloists or ensembles will be selected to perform in the final.

Eventual abbreviations to the performance program and its order during the first round, the second round and the final will be determined by the directors of the competition. In the final of the competition, the jury will determine the pieces to be performed. At least one composition has to be performed from memory (for piano solo and violin solo only). The repertoire chosen has to be originally written for piano, violin or ensemble, transcriptions can be played but they must be approved by the management before competition starts. Applications must be received before 25 April 2012 and will have to be send to Violin and Friends International Music Festival to vfimfestival@gmail.com The application form is available for download . Late entries will not be accepted.

The following documents must be included:

- an application form completed in English or French and signed

- birth certificate of each participant or a personal statement

- a short curriculum vitae of the competitor or the ensemble (of each member) in English

- a JPG or TIFF 300 DPI photograph to be sent to vfimfestival@gmail.com

- a receipt of the Enrollment fee (€75.– per ensemble or €40.– per individual), paid in EUR exclusively through bank transfer to the following account: Violin Limited, HSBC Malta plc – 32, Merchants Street, Valletta – IBAN: MT97MMEB44853000000085130193001 BIC/SWIFT: MMEBMTMT

- a letter of recommendation from one well-known musicians of high standing (not more than three years old)

- in case of binding contractual relations with agents, record companies or similar organizations, their clearance is necessary for the instrumentalist or the ensemble to meet the commitments resulting from the participation in the competition.

The documents will not be returned. Incomplete application documents might result in the exclusion from the competition. The organization committee will allow ensembles to participate in the competition only if the difference between the documents required and provided is marginal and does not contradict the competition regulations.

List of cities with connections to Malta International Airport (MLA) can be seen here. Obtaining appropriate travel documents and insurance is the sole responsibility of each competitor. VFIMF accepts no liability of any kind whatsoever for any personal illness or injury sustained by the competitor or for loss or damage to a competitor’s belongings, including instrument, during transit or while at the competition. Should a situation arise where the instrumentalist or the winning ensemble cannot procure the necessary travel documents or visas, or cannot fulfill the concert obligations, the Malta International Music Competition retains the right to transfer the winning prize to the runner up or a instrumentalist or an ensemble of its choosing.

On 4 July 2012 from 9:00am to 12:00pm, the participants are asked to register at the VFIMF Office, where, after establishing their identity, they will be given a participation card admitting them to the first round. Delays of any kind will not be tolerated. The order of performances will be established on the 4 July 2012 at 14:30pm.

The prize-giving concert will be held on 8 July 2012 at 19:30 in Manoel Theater (Valletta).

The organizers are authorized to utilize and exploit the recordings in sound, image and digital media as well as for presentation on the internet. For this purpose, all participants cede all requisite rights of use, exploitation and broadcast to the organizers; the right to publish details of the competitors, ensembles and its members and pass them to third parties. VFIMF has the right to produce and distribute without limit or payment of any fee, audio and/or video recordings of all competition performances, concerts, events etc.

The directors of the competition can, under certain circumstances, cancel the competition. This concerns in particular the case in which not enough applications have been received for the competition. Cancellation of the competition entitles participating instrumentalists or ensembles only to the reclamation of their Enrollment fee.

Travel, accommodation and food expenses are at the charge of the participants. Nevertheless, the management of Malta International Music Competition will help finding accommodation for the candidates. Please do not hesitate to contact us with accommodation or other problems.
 Inform us as soon as possible should you have any special requests.

VFIMF accommodations are located in Lija, 10-20 minutes drive to Valletta.

Participants of Malta International Music Competition have to accept all of the established rules.

Having studied the conditions, the signatory accepts the stipulations and regulations of  Malta International Music Competition.
